InnerSource and Code Openness
InnerSource transfers the success models of open-source projects (such as pull requests, asynchronous code reviews, and transparency) to internal software development within organisations.
Core Concept
Any developer in the organisation can identify issues in other teams' codebases and submit fixes via pull request. This eliminates bottlenecks and promotes knowledge sharing across departmental boundaries.
Application
- Trusted Committers: Defining experienced gatekeepers who review and merge external contributions.
- Discoverability: Making internal projects findable through excellent documentation and metadata.
- Collaboration Culture: Allocating time for supporting other teams as a recognised part of performance.
