Matomo

Matomo (formerly Piwik) is an open-source alternative to Google Analytics. It provides detailed insights into user behaviour without relinquishing control over the data.

Core concept

Sovereignty through self-hosting: data is stored on the organisation's own server in Switzerland or the EU. No data transfer to US services takes place, which greatly simplifies compliance with nFADP/GDPR.

Assessment

• Use case: Web analytics for anyone who takes data protection seriously and wants to avoid cookie-banner escalation.
• Advantage: 100% data ownership, built-in IP anonymisation, and no data sampling limits.
• Limitation: Requires operating a self-hosted server with regular updates, or using the paid cloud version.
