Backstage
Backstage is an open-source framework developed by Spotify for building internal developer platforms (IDPs). It consolidates software catalogues, documentation, and automation in a single interface.
Core concept
Centralising the developer world: a single place to find services, start new projects via software templates, and monitor the state of the infrastructure.
Assessment
- Use case: Organisations with more than 50 developers or high service complexity (microservices).
- Advantage: Massive reduction of cognitive load, standardisation of workflows, and promotion of an InnerSource culture.
- Limitation: High initial effort for setup and plugin maintenance; requires dedicated platform engineers.
